It becomes second nature during autocross; and only is an issue on a course where you have to shift from 1,2,3,2,3,2,1,2,3,2,3,2,1 or something, so your left foot is dancing quite a bit. Does it help // am I faster? I do not honestly know, but it's more fun for me, so why not? Coming out of a corner under full boost is always fun.
Ray,

What your 2nd gear go to? I would guess 63 mph or less.

Ben
Ray,

I've studied the benefits of shifting to 3rd vs staying in 2nd quite a bit. The general rule is that you lose 3 tenths of a second shifting. Therefore if shifting to 3rd doesnt gain you 6 tenths your better off using the limiter. I've found that the even under these circumstances I've always had a hard time going from 3rd to 2nd in a braking zone and getting it right everytime. Likewise when tight courses run down to speeds that require you to use 1st.

The "study" was done back to back with a gps, log and two competent drivers.

The car I drove topped out at 52mph in second gear. (k20 civic with a big FD) rarely was I faster going to 3rd.

Ray wrote:Yes, much less. I no longer have a speedometer. I have the 87 TC T5, with the short ratios, and i converted my rear to a 3.36 which helped a bit over the 3.64. One some of our tiny courses, it's a non-issue, but on our longer courses it really hurts me. So i'm adding horsepower, changing the intake manifold, etc, to increase top end.
I have looked into this over a 100 times and think that going to a 3.35 1st, 1.99 2nd T5 would be better then the 3.36 diff. One thing is the diff change is only going to give you a 5 mph change, your still going to shift, where the Trans change will give you a 11mph change and you wouldn't have to change gear very offen. Just my .02

The other thing is when you use your left foot brake techinque your going to be very fast.

Catapultkid - the difference btwn our courses out here are small lots where max speed is about 50 mph (no shifting out of 2nd required) and Thompson, which has some straights that approach 1/8 mile, so you literally top out 3rd gear. Not shifting out of second gear would cost seconds.

Ben, i'd love to have a trans like that, just not in the budget right now. Combine that with the 3.36 rear end, and i'd be a happy camper.

Sorry Ray, forgot you where with Cartct. We almost moved next to Hartford last January. You have that huge track autox, my wife and I looked at your club a lot before deciding against the move. (Too cold she says...)

It's only cold in the winter! Gives you plenty of time to put your car on jackstands and tinker :)

Well after lots of sitting on my hands so I didn't buy something I didn't need, I took the to4b apart rebuilted it and HOLY $#!* BAT MAN does this have alot of power and just drove it up and down the street so can't really tell but my butt dyno is saying YES, can't wait to drive it next weekend in anger.

Also remove all the heater hoses and bypassed them through the heater core, found a hose with a big cut it by the oil filter cooler thing, I don't know how it didn't brust.

All new front spoiler, basically the samething I've always had just one piece now.

I know I'm going to have it tune because now it has alittle dead spot right on off throttle to throttle on but feels good other wise. Still looking for an aluminum head before I spend money on a tune.

Really close, have the collars, now need to get the treaded bodies done, it's only money.

Your right I could find the right size for both, so want would cost more to make, the machinist said the collars so now it's just the tube to be threaded.

catapultkid wrote:That makes my 225 f / 245 r setup look a lot better. Does your car push much at low speed? How is turn in? Does it have any throttle off over steer with the suspension set up the way you like it?
Only when I had my 10,000 rpm clutch (13 lbs) did I have throttle over steer, put the aluminum flywheel and pete's 4 puck clutch (26 lbs) and it stopped that but putting it back in the 10,000 rpm clutch next month because I like that feel.

Took out the wiring harness to the engine, rolled it up put it in a box and put the 6.0 lbs by the battery. Changing exhaust system next week to save 5 lbs, Change aero Again!

Changing valve springs from stock 70lbs to dual 100lbs so it will rev past 6600 rpms.

Aluminum Drive shaft next month, save 7 lbs in weight and in rotational weight.

Found some rear flanges that are 1 lbs lighter ea, going in the car next week.

10,000 rpm clutch going in to save 13 lbs more, 2 months before the National's so I'll have time to get used to it.

Big tune a month before the National's and that should be it.

Thats it for this year.
