I wondered what happened to you (thermal efficiency = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Hopefully it was a good one (or it could be written thermal efficiency = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). I could use one myself (thermisters should be placed close to both ends of the IC core in order to reduce errors from heat absorbtion and rejection outside the IC core itself).

Good to have you back, John (and remember, intercoolers = good).

Edit: I have removed the improper formula for heat exchanger efficiency above and will replace it with the correct one here:

thermal efficiency = (Tout - Tsurrounding)/(Tin - Tsurrounding)

Where:

- Tout = temperature out of the intercooler core
- Tin = temperature into the intercooler core
- Tsurrounding = ambinent air temperature

Hey! Just a thought on these Cossie type set up. What about the chimeny effect of the hot rad underneath it. Almost like it would be better to use the short rad up high and put the I/C underneath it.

I'm actually leaning now to the dual Saab deal in the battery box location. just to keep all the piping kind off short and away from heat sources, although I think they would get nice and toasty there as well...Also considering (since I'm not trying to make mega HP) moving the stock rad back (there's a few inches there) and down enough to clear 2.5 pipe and going with a thin large area NPR Volvo type deal IN FRONT of the rad with the pipe going off the compressor over the V/C to the drivers side then a simple straight pipe with a 90 bend into the tb...maybe jet coat that pipe or wrap it...

good luck droppin the rad that much. in order to fit probe I/C tubes over mine i had to drop it a fair bit, they're only just under 2" tubes, and i would not want to drop the rad any more.

also, that was in the '89, and stock the rads in the '89 leave a little more space than they did in the earlier cars, so in an earlier one you'd have to drop it even more.

there is also Hartwoods system, while pricey, it is a very nice set up and works. very similar in design to RS Consultans/XR Components system, but bigger. no mods needed, includes everything even the radiator and fans, but this isnt for the typical XR" cheap bastard owner " the MP system works good, and i didnt have to make any mods to my car (it came from Cliff W-thanks), drill 4 holes into the frame and on you go. pricey again, but it does work. it replace my Rapido IC, and Russ was taking notes when he first saw it
lazerscort wrote:wow thanks
that was more than i was expecting but it was very helpful
so the rapido so far is the only one that comes with all the piping
and since im pertty new at the turbo game and dont have alot of resources for fabrication and only atleast for the next year jsut want at max do 20 psi and keep it simple and easily driveable

Thanks, we had a great time (I think it's important to insulate the rad from the core, and did it in my setup), except I should have given us another day or two (in fact, the more insulation, especially on the cold side, the better). I did manage to get a little color poolside yesterday (directing the airflow through ducting and such to insure that the maximum amount of air actually goes THROUGH the core is very important also), and also re-affirmed my belief that the Scottsdale area has some of the most bitchin' restaurants to be found (let's face it, the stock rad is best replaced by a shorty in any FMIC application). I was actually inspired to become a restaurant critic here in Washington, because to me it seriously lags in comparison (why risk pranging your rad-- or your IC core-- on some unexpectedly severe convolution in the road?), and I honestly think it could benefit by a little constructive criticism.

that is truly painful to read.

Str-e-tch that brain! I dunno. Double tracking seems so natural-- must be the effects of so many years in the biz...

As nice as some of these pre-packaged systems are, in each case the price is prohibitive. When a Saab rad, any number of several cores, and piping are as easy to source as they are for so much less money, and given the DIY traditions of Merkur ownership, why spend more than you have to? You're not getting anything that much better.

I dont mean to jump in the middle and break the flow, (figured this would be the place to do it though) but does anybody know what Rick Byrnes was talking about in the IMON archives on "Nicks Charge Air Cooler"?

Quote from: http://www.merkurtech.com/merkurtech/te ... tem042.php

"Our older technology EEC IV factory turbo cars
are more responsive to upgrades to allow higher boost and air flow levels.
Save the money and buy one of Nicks charge air coolers. Its the best
investment for the money that your gonna get."

Just curious to know what setup it is and to learn more about it and felt it might benefit this thread!

Wow, I had forgotten that was in there. That's reference to the Modern Performance intercooler. Great core, poor location. It still is a way better investment than the latest whizbang ignition coil, multiple spark box, and $14-per-plug spark plugs.

Is this the correct Modern performance website?

http://www.modernperformanceinc.com/

Didnt really see any good pics of the intercooler system on there, just a top pic of the engine bay.

I can get you pics of the MP IC. 1st of all, DO NOT give that m*****f****r a dime of your hard earned money. 2nd, yes, that's his website. His IC setup is the most jury rigged peice of $#!* you've ever seen. Yes it's a great core, but it's mounted in a bad spot, and it's got about a mile and a half of crush bent piping. The location where the piping goes by the A/C compressor the piping is just smashed so it will clear.

Join me in congratulating Nick with another "winning" combination of well performing parts at a reasonable cost.

"Smooth bent, specifically sized, insulated tubing (2.5" inlet and 2.5" outlet and approximately 5 ft. in total length) delivers incredible flow without any throttle lag, unlike most others."

so i'm guessing that's a total load?

Everything that Nick says/produces is a total load. Too many people have been everything but pissed on by the guy, and as far as I've seen there's not one peice of equipment that he has that there isn't a better option for cheaper somewhere else (e.g. $1100 for his IC, and $700+ for his crush bent 3" exhaust).
