Speedometer Cable Removal from Cluster?

I have the clutster loose and I can just barely get my hand on the SC. How do I remove it? It turns but that is not taking it off. Thanks

Simply squeeze the end of the quick-connector between your thumb and pointer finger and pull it away from the cluster. Don't feel bad - everyone goes through this the first time unless they've got the later setup that fastens at the false firewall. I converted my car to that type - much nicer to work with.

Guess I am getting old. I tried to squeeze that white plastic knob which just turns. It seems to only have one place that looks like a squeeze spot and the other side is like an open slot. Maybe I need to eat some more "Wheaties". Doesn't the XR make anything easy? Besides how to cost us lots of money?

Same thing happened to me. I got the cluster unscrewed and low and behold, the speedo cable holds it very close to the dash. D'oh, forgot about that.

It's not so much a squeeze, but pushing it to one side.

Here's all you need to do. Feel the white part for the ridges the stand up and push that part towards the cable. The cable will come out when you pull on the cluster.
There is a tab that rides in a track around the cluster end. You are pushing the tab out of that track.

It's kind of a PITA, I have my lower dash removed so it's easier to reach.

There's a retaining clip on the speedometer cable that is screwed into the inner fender. Just unscrew that and it will give you about 2-3 more inches to work with.

Good advise. Just be prepared for the screw that fastens that clip to be seized in place. Going after it with a leverage (i.e. ratcheting bit holder), will usually do the trick, but I've had to drill a couple out over the years. I *think* it is a Pozidrive head (PZ1) rather than Phillips. Using the correct bit will make a world of difference.

Are you talking about a clip that goes thru the firewall? There is a cable that looks like the it is metal and comes up to a round support and thru the firewall.

The speedo works but the tack is very low. If I can't get it loose, I will just put it back together and chalk it up to experience unlearned. At my age, life is to short to spend a lot of time on this. PITA it sure is.

Speedometer cable,

No! Just go under the hood and follow the cable as it comes out through the fire wall. You will see where it connects to the inner fender.

No, it's down low where the cable goes under the car. I think there are two of them down there. "Clip" isn't really the right term - I'm sure there's a specific word for what these are, but it's not coming to me.

Thanks guys, I put it all back together and no parts left over. The Speedo works, don't need an accurate tach. At least I got it almost. Frag said well, a real PITA. Good exercise.

Think I will trade it in on a Ford Pick Up.
